ACT for Spiritual Development Summary:

In 1984 Steven C. Hayes published Making Sense of Spirituality. This article provided a basis for examining spirituality without relying on a natural verses supernatural dualism. That paper became the stating point for what is, today, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy as well as Relational Frame Theory. It also provides a starting point for a spiritual development that teaches how to accept, choose and teach others to do likewise. This workshop will be held on April 14, 2012, in Boulder, CO.

The workshop begins with the common distinctions of mind, body and spirit and shows how to use five aspects of spiritual experience in the every day world. The workshop aims to develop the capacity for spiritual development by all human beings and is not limited to, or even particularly targeted at, those who come to psychological treatment clinics or offices. Issues addressed will include: sorrow and fulfillment, unhappiness and happiness, forgiveness and reconciliation and living life from “the eye of the hurricane” rather than from its edge. It asks participants to consider a question posed by Joseph Campbell, “Are you looking for the meaning of life or the experience of being alive?”

Dr. Hank Robb received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1978. Dr. Robb served as Director of Counseling and Associate Professor of Psychology at Lewis Clark State College, Lewiston, Idaho, between 1978 and 1986 as well as President of the Idaho Psychological Association and Chair of the Idaho psychological licensing board before moving to Oregon where he continues his private psychology practice in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Dr. Robb is board certified in both Counseling Psychology and Behavioral Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and holds a Certificate of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders from the American Psychological Association’s College of Professional Psychology. He previously served as President of the American Board of Counseling Psychology and is listed as an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Trainer and a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Supervisor. He served eight years as the Chair for the Spiritual and Religious Special Interest Group of the Association for Behavioral & Cognitive Therapy. He has authored articles and book chapters on a wide variety of psychological issues and is recognized as a Humanist Minister by the American Humanist Association’s Humanist Society of Friends.
