Web-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a multi-component treatment with significant empirical support for its efficacy in the treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders. Although developed for primary sleep complaints, CBT-I also is appropriate for clients who suffer from sleep problems in the context of another disorder (such as depression, bipolar disorder, chronic pain or anxiety). Unfortunately, many clinicians do not have the requisite training to target insomnia directly.

Thus, the Boulder Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, LLP (BCCBT) in collaboration with www.PracticeGround.org is excited to offer a 6-session web-based training course for clinicians who want to become proficient in providing CBT-I. Participants will learn about the use of mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies in addition to the traditional CBT-I treatment protocol.

The class will contain didactic and experiential instruction in: * the CBT model of what maintains chronic sleep problems over time; the physiology of healthy sleep; * various behavioral treatment components (e.g., sleep restriction, stimulus control, sleep hygiene); * cognitive therapy strategies * enhancing traditional CBT-I with mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies * decision tree model designed to aid clinicians in deciding which treatment components will be optimal for particular clinical presentations. * use of worksheets and sleep logs

The course is structured as a virtual classroom, and the class will "meet" via live audio each week for 60 minutes. Participants will be able to view a live video feed of the facilitators while simultaneously viewing a PowerPoint presentation, and there will be ample opportunity for questions. Experiential learning will be emphasized (i.e., participants will be asked to practice many of the strategies between sessions), and participants will be encouraged to use a discussion forum to discuss the material between class meetings.
